What is clean beauty?
You’ve probably heard of clean eating. How about clean beauty? It’s a relatively new buzz word in the personal care industry. What is clean beauty and why does it matter?
The beauty industry, including makeup and skincare, is virtually unregulated in the US.
In fact, the last piece of regulation for the personal care industry was passed in 1938!!
So what does this mean?
The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has restricted the use of approximately 30 ingredients for use in personal care and cosmetic products in the US. Other than those ingredients, anything is fair game. While this doesn’t necessarily mean all products are harmful, it does put a lot of responsibility on consumers. We must read labels and be mindful of what we’re using every day.
Products we use every day such as mascara, lipstick, shampoo, and face cleanser can include toxic ingredients including carcinogens and endocrine disrupters. What we use daily to clean, moisturize, or make us feel beautiful can actually be harmful to our health and the health of our families. Even in small amounts, they can have a negative cumulative effect on our health.
Endocrine or hormone disrupters, such as phthalates, are commonly found in personal care products and are dangerous even in small doses. They actually mimic the way our bodies naturally interact with hormones. During certain periods of development, we are more susceptible to hormone disruption and this can affect our health later in life.
Companies can also use any words to describe their products. Words such as “natural,” “pure,” “botanical”, “green” and “eco-friendly” are not regulated in relation to the personal care industry and have no enforceable definition. It’s still the consumer’s responsibility to read the label of ingredients on the products they’re using.

What is clean beauty?
Clean beauty means the ingredients are non-toxic. The products do not contain ingredients such as parabens, sulfates, phthalates, synthetic fragrances, DEA, mineral oils, and chemical sunscreens, that are linked to harmful hormone disruption, cancer, or skin irritation.
European countries have strict regulations for their personal care product industry. They ban more than 1300 potentially harmful ingredients from use in beauty products.
